About this place
While waiting for the ramen, snack on kimchi; when the bowls arrive, compare the light and rich versions. That is how one visitor to the Ikuno Tatsumi branch described enjoying a meal here. Kappa Ramen’s standard bowl is tonkotsu soy-sauce ramen. The rich version gets extra depth and sweetness from back fat, while the lighter one uses aromatic seafood oil. One diner who tried both said they enjoyed the contrast.
For a cleaner taste of pork-bone broth, consider Shirakappa Ramen, made with white soy sauce. Its pale colour and mild umami let the pork broth’s flavour come through, with a crisp finish. Kurokappa adds roasted garlic oil; Red Kappa brings heat from a special chilli oil blended with several spices. There is also vegetable ramen, with plenty of vegetables adding sweetness and umami to the broth.
Some visitors mention enjoying the complimentary kimchi before their ramen. The menu describes its balance of sweetness and acidity as a good choice even for those who are not keen on spicy food. Fried garlic is also offered free of charge. Both make useful accompaniments if you want to change things up as you eat.
If you would like a little more, ask for an extra serving of noodles. The menu advertises one free refill per ramen bowl, though some branches may not offer it at certain times, so check when you visit. Diners at the Ikuno Tatsumi branch have mentioned enjoying the free refill, and one reported pairing rich Kappa Ramen with rice.
For a side, try the gyoza, described as crisp on the grilled side with pleasantly chewy wrappers, or the fried chicken made with thigh meat, praised for its crisp texture and savoury aroma. Set meals pair ramen with white rice and either gyoza or fried chicken; rice comes in small, regular or large portions. One visitor also liked eating the fried chicken with a little mayonnaise. Families can opt for the children’s set, which includes a children’s ramen, fried chicken, potato mochi, apple juice and a toy.
The Tatsumi Higashi branch is open daily from 10:30 until 1 the following day. It can suit a later meal, and free parking is listed.
